Richard Johnson
The luminescent beauty and vivid quality is what captivates collectors. “Old Masters” technical virtuosity, pre-Raphael romanticism, contemporary expressionism & abstraction all combine to create his unique works of touching depth and artistry.Richard’s expressive skill for capturing the human form has brought him numerous commissions:
A commemorative painting of the presidents from Eisenhower to Bush currently hanging at the President’s Council on Physical Fitness in Washington D.C.
Rear Admiral Richard S. Truly, USN, and the first commander of the NASA Space Shuttle Challenger.
Born into an artistic family in Chicago, IL where his talent was encouraged from a very young age. While still in grade school he won a scholarship to the prestigious Art Institute and later attended the Academy of Art. Upon graduation, he began a very successful career as an illustrator. Early on he was exposed to the beautiful figurative work of Charles Dana Gibson, N.C. Wyeth and John Singer Sargent books on rainy afternoons.
His portraits of John F. Kennedy are currently on display at the JFK Memorial Library in Boston. For over 20 years his work has graced the covers of numerous books and magazines, like Golf Digest and The Irish Rebel by Nora Roberts. He has also created limited edition prints for the USA Olympic Ski Team and for the International Classic Soccer Championship in Mexico City.
Drawing on the influence of painters like Adolphe-William Bouguereau and Frank W. Benson, Rick has sought to create paintings that capture the light and beauty of a moment in time. The contemplative moment of a child, the way a young girl’s face reflects the sunlight, or the play of the shadows of trees on a field are all the subject matter of his art.
