James Collender (1935-2011)
The American West. The most beautiful and mysterious of all places. Few have captured it artistically with the enthusiasm and imagination of James Collender. His attention to detail and historical accuracy have made him more than just a western artist. He is a chronicler of a time barely out of our grasp yet distant enough to be forgotten. The world of our grandfathers is Collender's subject -- and he brings it to life. Born in California, James Collender attended Chouinard Art Institute and Orange Coast College. He has spent over forty years in the arts as an illustrator of western magazines, animator of feature length television films and as Art Director of a major corporation.
James has illustrated covers for many New York publications such as "The West," "Golden West," as well as "Colorado Outdoors," "Western Horseman" and "Paint Horse." One of James' most rewarding projects was as the Background Director for "The Night before Christmas," executing over 200 scenes for the animated television special.
Collender is one of the founding members of the "Hole-in-the-Wall Gang," an organization originally headed by Red Fenwick, Denver Post reporter, known for his effervescent personality. This group of Colorado businessmen, artists, and ranchers make annual pack trips to wilderness areas with frequent visits to Wyoming's Hole in the Wall country.
James Collender is a leading authority on the West and this expertise is demonstrated in his paintings and sculptures. His works center on the West, both past and present.
Many notable collectors have acquired James Collender's exceptional works. His resume includes celebrities and art enthusiasts throughout the country. Jim resided in the West where he researches his paintings to find the inspiration for his work. Much to everyone's surprise, James Collender passed away February 9, 2011. He will truly be missed and was such a talented individual.
